Infusing eMpathy in Mindful Masterpieces (Arts Integration and Acorn Initiative) FCIS Early Childhood Institute #ECI2020


Hey! We did it! Presentation was full and we hope everyone walked away with a few good ideas to make even better at their own schools. Thanks FCIS for having us present and a huge shout out to our break out session attendees.


 How cool is this....before we started, we had an alum come up and introduce herself. She is Whitney Douglas and a graduate of Maclay. Small world. Her sister in law is Katie - my math teacher friend and that spoke of in the link below. If you follow our blog - a connection is she is "Finona's" Aunt.


 We want to be social media friends with our new friends from our break out session, so we decided to post on it!

I am really blessed to work with Cathy, she is a huge team player and great friend!


Kudos to FCIS Daniel Hodgins was a great keynote speaker.


His visuals were spot on and entertaining.

Jam packed sessions full of lots of learning and professional development opportunities.


This was on the rolling cart where we needed to set up all of our tech stuff. Shout out to our new friend Dominique. He came to our rescue. Now, that friends is a story for another time but he was a life saver and this business card was a GAME Changer for our technical situation. =)


And we were set up with all of our resources.


Of course, we rearranged the room because that is what art teachers tend to do.

Ok, side note...Well, I taught all day and at 9:00 am I had a snack that required a spoon. I was talking to my math teacher friend Katie that I blogged on here.
I said to Katie, I am going to put this spoon here so I can drop it in my bag, I might need it for my road trip. Katie in her sarcastic voice says to me, "Kim, you can always get another spoon!" Ya'll...I taught the rest of the day. I drove 5 hours to Orlando. Checked in at hotel. Made it to room. And, I was unpacking my toiletries and heard a weird noise on my arm. A clanking with my bracelet.  Hello, I look down and was like - OH MY WORD...this spoon, This spoon has been with me all day in my sleeve and I never noticed it. Neither did Cathy on our adventurous road trip. Crazy, right? Well, this kind of stuff happens all the time to me. So, those of you who personally know me are not surprised. We are going to add this to a chapter in one of my future books that I may write! Lawdy me....

Teaching empathy doesn’t need to be a stand-alone lesson, it can be incorporated into all subjects. Let us share with you how infusing empathy in Mindful Masterpieces of Art engages and motivates students by emphasizing active learning rather than passive learning. With our arts integration and acorn initiative concept, we are building a community of learners who discover ways to work creatively, purposely and productively in groups for a specific reason. By teaching kids how to understand and share the feelings of another person it helps everyone make meaningful connections across diverse experiences and with those who are different than us. This integrated curriculum theme encompasses a variety of media using the mind, heart and art together. All educators / disciplines can benefit, we want to share with you what has worked for us.
