Self-Portrait & Self-Identity Art Project

I saw these art projects hanging in the hall and I knew I needed to blog on it!

Mrs. DJ Blalock’s high school art class did these awesome art projects.  I asked DJ about the project and she said that they were required to do half self-portrait and half self-identity.  If you knew the kids, you would say that they were spot on.

Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Messy Collaboration Project

The first grade and the high school collaborated on this project.  We were lucky enough to have high school art students taking photos on campus. When I heard this, I thought about this project.  

How did it go down?

I printed off the photos of places on campus taken by the upper school students.

I taught a mini lesson on Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Messy.  

I showed Mr. Messy read aloud on YouTube.  Click HERE for Mr. Messy Read Aloud!

The kids drew Mr. Messy or their versions of Mr. or Miss Messy.

They used Kwik Stix Solid Tempera Paint Sticks to color.

They chose one of the campus photos.

They cut out their drawing.

They glued the Hargreaves character on one of the campus photos.

Cardboard Cutout Characters

Here is a great project for middle or maybe even high school art students.  Also, you get to get rid of some boxes that have been sitting around.  Recycling is good, folks!

How did it go down?

I kind of let the kids decide what they wanted to do.  I told them that I wanted the project to stand by itself.  Of course, several were not that secure so I ended up hot gluing most of the projects.  

A few complained because they thought the cardboard was hard to cut.  Make sure you have good scissors!

Some painted with watercolor.  Some used oil pastels.  A few used woodies and colored pencils.

Roger Hargreaves with 5th Grade!

Here is an easy lesson for any day!  Roger Hargreaves is always a crowd pleaser!

How did it go down?

Well, I gave the students a handout with lots of Roger Hargreaves characters.

They chose one and made it their own!
