Winter Creations in Maclay Lower School with Mary Byrd

I love how each of these are the same but different!

Mary Byrd does it again...I was making my daily visit on the hallway of the lower school at Maclay. And, this way super cool bulletin board caught my eye! I thought it was so crisp and artsy that I wanted to share the work of this 5th grade class.  Thanks Mary Byrd for letting me share your student's work.

I had no idea this song below was name Three Little Birds - I always thought it was Don't Worry - Well, then ya learn something new everyday!

Pop Art Hearts-East Art Project

Need a colorful art project for Valentine's Day?  These flying hearts were a big hit with third grade.  They had a mini lesson on pop art and I let the kids' creativity fly away!

Directions:

I discussed pop art.
The kids divided their paper into fourths.
The kids drew hearts with wings.
The kids colored the hearts with oil pastels.
The kids outlined the hearts with black oil pastel.
The kids painted the background with tempera.

I just ❤ The Avett Brothers and this old gospel hymn!

Mrs. Hicks and Van Gogh in Maclay Lower School Art

Cathy does it again! Aren't these Starry Night oil pastels amazing?
Cathy used:
9x12 paper
Oil Pastels

She was able to touch on and teach many Elements and Principles of Art with this lesson.
She creates a mean bulletin board in our Maclay Lower School Commons.
Thanks, Cathy, for allowing me to share your kid's art!

Catching Snowflakes!

I know that this art lesson has been all around the mulberry bush, but I just love it.  My first graders do not get snow much, but they love to think about it.  So, we gave this lesson a try, one more time!

Directions:

I guided the students in drawing the face and upper body.
Many wanted to get detailed with arms, but I encouraged them to stick to the basics.
They used oil pastels to color.
They outlined with a black oil pastel.

It sure is cold outside.  When it snows in Georgia, it is cold!

Overlapping Snowmen with Third Grade

I ran across these overlapping snowmen at Kids Artists and thought so cute!  Thanks so much, Kids Artists Blog!  Also, I loved the idea of the snowmen overlapping.  The project was done with third grade.  It was our first project back after Christmas break.  The kids really liked the project!

We have posted on snowmen before on 2 Soul Sisters:

Directions:

I discussed the overlapping factor and did several examples on my marker board.
The kids practiced drawing overlapping snowmen.
When the kids were ready, I gave them blue construction paper and they penciled in the snowmen.
Once they were happy with the snowmen, they used oil pastels and filled in the snowmen.
The last thing they did was outline the snowmen with black oil pastels.

I love the snowmen.  I love snow.  I love The Red Hot Chili Peppers singing "Snow".

Children's Literature and Art

Need an art activity for your Kindergarten and Preschool kids with the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Book?  I was walking through the Preschool Building and saw this fun activity.  Then, I ran across a cute video on YouTube that was so very cute!

Directions:

Read the Book

Then, have the kids cut basic shapes.
After they get the coconut tree done, have them stick their names on the paper.
I really like the yellow paper posted that has them count the letters in their name.
Great project to do art, literature, and math.

Here is a great song that you can show the kids!

Mountain Landscapes with Markers

The Mountain Landscape was a quick and easy lesson for 6th grade.  Also, I think that it would be a great sub lesson.

Directions:

Draw a landscape with Mountains.
The landscape must have 5 layers.
Apply elements and principles of design throughout the artwork.

Here is Joe Walsh with some good old Rock and Roll about Mountains...
