Jasper Johns Abstract Art

My 8th graders loved the freedom of this Jasper Johns project, but they struggled with one thing.  What?  They struggled with scribbling.  I had never expected scribbling to be a "thing", but it was.  Once they embraced the scribble, the projects evolved into a fun art activity for the kids.

Directions:
I briefly introduced Jasper Johns.  I shared some of his artwork.
The kids made words with stencils.  They filled in with various shapes.
They kids used liquid watercolor to paint.

The Jasper Johns project was pretty simple.  This Jason Isbell song is pretty simple, but I like it.
Enjoy.
