How did we partner up with these guys? Well, my mom is there with them in Marshallville, GA. And, I learned a lot from my parents of giving to others. You see we grew up going to nursing homes to see my great grandma, Muer, she was in Thomaston, GA. Her real name was Frances. In fact, 1969's daughter is named after her too, Mary Frances. The 2 Soul Sisters not only understand Sympathy but we really "get" Empathy! Yup, we were raised up right in middle Georgia! We can pick weeds, strip negatives at Taylor County Printing, and help deliver "prizes" that mom and dad would create for other's in our community. I think they had to of been spreaders of "Positivity" back in the day!
How we both ended up being art teachers, I will never know but I am so glad we did! This blog has been a good way for us to document our art classes and some of the history from our family.

At Maclay in Middle School Art - how does this kind of class resonate?
We take all that is listed below. Think outside the box or as if there was no box and create art with a Service Learning piece.
Middle School Art
The Middle School Visual Arts program offers classes as part of a block schedule. Each Visual Arts class is a semester long class. All students are presented with opportunities to enter various art competitions throughout the year. At the middle school level, students are introduced to a wider variety of art experiences. Building on the elementary foundation, students continue exposure to the masters through art history and are introduced to a variety of mediums. There is continued focus on exercising a working knowledge of the elements of art, the principles of design, and how to apply these tools to their individual creations. The young artist gains confidence in critical thinking skills in order to create stronger compositions in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, glass, ceramics, and other 3-D art works with our studio facilities being equipped to provide instruction in many divergent and differentiated ways. We have a spiraling curriculum that flows through each division thus preparing our middle school artist for their high school art experience

Community Outreach Through Arts (7th and 8th Grade)- COTA challenges students to examine their community and its needs, then address those needs through arts initiatives. Students will collaborate to create art projects that directly and positively impact both the Maclay and Tallahassee communities. Visual Arts strategies will be used in a service learning model. This class seeks to ingrain a spirit of service and empathy fitting of a Maclay Marauder. It will be a chance to make a creative and artist impact on the community and have fun while doing it.
Each student created a Tic Tac Toe board. They designed it with many different themes. They also created clay Acorns to use as the Tic Tac Toe pieces.
A lesson on Chris Uphues was taught:

So there ya have it...I love art. My class is designed for this method of Service Learning and I reached out to the folks that are caring for my Mama! I know one thing, our parents sure did let us be creative growing up and I am glad that they had the foresight to foster that in both of us. Yes, we have passed it on to all of our personal kids and our artists in our classes!
