Who is Alma Thomas?
Alma Thomas was an amazing artist who created colorful, joyful paintings. She was born in 1891 in Georgia, but her family later moved to Washington, DC, where she spent most of her life. Even though she loved art as a child, she didn’t become a famous artist until she was much older. Before painting full-time, she was a teacher and shared her love of art with students.
One cool thing about Alma Thomas is that she was the first African American woman to have her art shown in the White House collection and in major museums. That’s a big deal!
How Did She Paint?
Alma’s paintings are full of bright colors and patterns. She loved using short brushstrokes that look like little tiles or pieces of a mosaic. Her art often looks like it’s moving, kind of like ripples in water or sunlight shining through trees. She got a lot of inspiration from nature—flowers, the sky, and even space!
Instead of painting things that look realistic, Alma focused on how things made her feel. She used color and shape to show happiness, energy, and beauty.
Let’s Paint Like Alma Thomas!
In class, we honored Alma Thomas by creating our own artwork in her style. We’ll paint colorful hearts, using short, bright strokes to fill them with energy and joy. Think about colors that make you happy or remind you of something you love. Just like Alma Thomas, you can let your imagination guide you!
Remember, art is all about having fun and expressing yourself. Alma Thomas once said, “Through color, I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness.” Let’s do the same as we celebrate her amazing work!
