Teaching Abstract Art while you are CVC / Distance Learning and Face to Face - Check it out!

Have you ever tried to think outside the box and figure out how to teach in 2020 with CVC kids, Distance Learning and Face 2 Face in the classroom all at once...while you are trying not to lose to much of your curriculum? I found this great clip on Youtube by generaleuphoria.

generaleuphoria states that: This is an art lesson based on a scene from the Pixar movie Inside out where the characters become "abstracted" and go through four stages of abstraction. I tried to look at the art historical context of the different types of abstraction. At the end there is a short assignment the students can do. This lesson works great as a "flipped classroom" lesson, or if you would like to do this assignment yourself in class, you can download my powerpoint file from the link below: https://boydinrome.wixsite.com/msartl...

AS you can tell this was a successful lesson and I am glad to share it with you all in hopes it will help you too plan for an Abstract Art Lesson!

Rizzi, Pumpkins, and Perspective!

I have done this James Rizzi Pumpkin Perspective Project in the past with my 2nd graders.
Click HERE for James Rizzi 1 with pumpkin patch perspective

Directions:

I show some James Rizzi art.
(I do not show the entire video)

I give a general talk about perspective.
I put a crayon in each kid's face.
I tell the kids to measure the crayon with their 2 fingers.
Then I go to the farthest spot in the room and hold up the crayon.
I get them to hold their fingers up to measure the size of the crayon.
They are so amazed at how small the pumpkin is.
Also, we talk about the size of a boat in the ocean when you are standing on the shore.
If the weather is nice, I have taken the kids out to look at the big tree and showed them how small it is far away.
Lots of options, folks.

Then.

I draw hills on the board one at a time.
I tell the kids to thing about 3 different sized pumpkins.
I tell the kids to draw the largest pumpkin(s) on the first hill.
I tell them to draw the medium sized pumpkin(s) on the next hill.
I small pumpkin(s) on the hill that is farthest back in the drawing.
Believe it or not, they get it!

I encourage the kids to draw James Rizzi suns, moons, and birds on the art.  If they don't, I don't cry.

The kids paint with watercolor.

I told the kids to draw their turkeys in emoji style.

1965 Turkey with an Ed Heck The World of Ed Heck Mask on at Buc-ee's the first day it opened in Georgia!  I had not planned on going to Buc-ee's the first day it opened, but I was riding down I-75 and thought, why not?
A friend of mine said it was like Bass Pro and Sam's Club had a baby and named it Buc-ee's.  I think that description pretty much sums it up.
I think that I was a BIG Turkey yesterday and by stopping in on Buc-ee's on such first day madness that I have possibly attended a super spreader event.
Hope my Ed Heck mask Click HERE for Ed Heck mask did the job!
