Marwell's Zany Zebras in Southampton England

A week ago, we were driving through Southampton and I kept seeing ZEBRAS!!! I looked up all the information on the Marwell's Zany Zebra Art Project. It was the "Mane" event for me for sure in this town! I am amazed at the amount of involvement from the whole community. This is definitely something for us back here in the states to model a project after.

I was thinking within the school community you could do school mascot but in the whole community the possibilities are endless. I hope you enjoy this read - 1969

Marwell’s Zany Zebra Artists pack now available!

ARTISTS are being invited to decorate a ‘zany zebra’ for a mass art extravaganza next summer.
From July 2016, a zeal of Marwell’s Zany Zebras, will gallop through the streets of Southampton creating a fun, family friendly trail for all to enjoy. Brought to you by the same team behind the hugely successful Go! Rhinos of 2013, Marwell’s Zany Zebras promises to be even bigger and better!
The blank Grevy’s zebra sculptures will come to life as artists are commissioned to decorate them, creating a unique piece of artwork. The same commissioned artists will be asked to replicate their design on a miniature sculpture that will be part of a small scale trail throughout Marwell Zoo in Hampshire. Both trails will last 10 weeks.
Kirstie Mathieson, Project Manager for Marwell’s Zany Zebras added: “If your design is commissioned, the large and miniature sculptures will be seen by hundreds of thousands of wild explorers following the trails. It’s a fantastic and unique way of showcasing your work!
“Set to be the ‘MANE’ event in Southampton for 2016, we hope the dazzle of zebras will be a spectrum of styles, decorated in any type of medium. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!”
The pack is available to anyone, from artists, designers and illustrators to art enthusiasts with a creative spark. Submitted designs will be showcased to this year’s sponsors to choose from and the designs selected will be commissioned for the Marwell’s Zany Zebras trail.
The deadline for entry submission is 5pm on Friday 8 January 2016, for more information about how to design one of Marwell’s Zany Zebras, or to download the Artists Pack visit the website www.zanyzebras.org.uk/artists

Marwell's Zany Zebras
16 July - 25 September 2016

Get involved in the South's MANE event for 2016
For 10 weeks from Saturday 16 July 2016, a zeal of Marwell’s Zany Zebras will gallop through the streets of Southampton creating a fun, family friendly trail for all to enjoy. Brought to you by the same team at Marwell behind the hugely successful Go! Rhinos of 2013, Marwell’s Zany Zebras promises to be even bigger and better!

Marwell has chosen a Grevy’s zebra sculpture to highlight the plight of the species in the wild. For two decades Marwell Wildlife has been working with partners in northern Kenya to conserve wildlife in the area. There are under 3,000 Grevy’s zebra left in the wild.

In addition to this, a trail of replica miniature Marwell’s Zany Zebras will be hidden within Marwell Zoo itself. After the event, all of the large sculptures will be sold at auction to raise funds to conserve endangered Grevy’s zebras and other wildlife, and to support communities living in the arid rangelands of northern Kenya.

The business, artistic and academic communities have been working together  to help Marwell stage this extraordinary, family friendly event for 2016 that will brighten up the streets, enliven the parks, add vibrancy to the high street and most importantly…. smiles to hundreds of thousands of visitors and residents.
