Clay Wind Chimes - 3D Art Class

Have you ever been thrown a few curve balls and just had to take a minute to figure it out? Well, this lesson did just that to my students. We had to search the Design Thinking concept.

What is Design Thinking?

Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process which seeks to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions to prototype and test. The method consists of 5 phases—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test and is most useful when you want to tackle problems that are ill-defined or unknown.

You want to learn more on this topic - shoot on over to this link:

You will be glad you did! Good Stuff there!

So back to this lesson...I showed the students reference sheets on ideas for how this should typically look upon completion. Then we watched a quick video on slab rolling. I showed them different types of wind chimes. And, then they had 2 classes to create it. One to glaze and 2 more to construct it!

We recently blogged on these, check out the link below:

Most of you all know that I have a goal of 30 books, 30 podcast and 30 original pieces of art this year. Well, this is one of my books and it fits right in with this lesson. Kids had to figure out how to make these wind chimes.

Here are more words from Marie Forleo:

My first year of teaching my principal said to me, "there is no problem so great that we can't figure it out"- thanks, Debbie Wheat.  Our Professional Development that year was a study of Barbara Coloroso...take a listen.

Here is to figuring it out!
