Warm and Cool Jasper Johnny

Kids really enjoyed this study on Jasper Johns.  The first session was fairly organized, but the second session was a bit chaotic.  I like chaotic.
We have posted many times on Jasper Johns.  Click Here.

Directions:

1-Kids glued strips of newspaper on a sheet of paper with a glue stick.
2-Kids painted over the newspaper strip paper with cool colors.
3-Kids decided that they wanted to disguise their names.  So, they stamped only letters of their name.  They decided they could stamp as many letters as they wanted, but they would only choose letters in their name.  Why did they do this?  Well, they thought it would be fun to guess their names when I hung the projects in the hall.  Oh yeah, they stamped names in warm colors.

I just loved this activity.  I loved them having to work as a unit and share the stamps.  It appeared to be a hot mess, but, from a teacher standpoint, it was a cool learning experience that evolved with little of my assistance.  Kids can do a lot, but you have to be willing to totally give it over to them.  Give it up sometimes, teachers!
