Mama's Purple Coneflower, Pointillism, and George Seurat

The purple coneflower is a really artsy plant.  So why not get kids to do art with it?

Directions:
I had kids put a yellow wash on their paper.
I showed the video below on Seurat and Pointillism.  Cute video!

I had kids look at a picture of the purple coneflower.

The kids drew their version of the purple coneflower.
I told them to use their middle finger as a tool for the length of the leaves.
Kids outlined gently with oil pastels.
Kids used Q-tips to dot and DOT ONLY on the stem and flower petals.
Kids touched up with oil pastels.

Wow, the purple coneflower almost as cool as Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze.

Glass Bead Making with 8th Grade

To purchase a glass bead blowing kit click here .
I have done this with my 8th graders and Art Club this school year.
If you live near a Hobby Lobby and run out of supplies you can go there to replenish.
This is a great process art lesson. The students are able to experience the torch and melting glass as they try to manipulate it top wrap around a steel mandrel to create a glass bead!

We have blogged on this is the past

Stop at 7:00 or sooner
Jennings644 had a BIG British accent and my southern kids just loved it!
Also, I liked the kids seeing her blend the pastels.  She had several tips that helped my kids develop new techniques.

After watching the video, draw the flower with oil pastel.
Then paint the background with watercolor.
By the way, we used watercolor paper.

Nice project for Moms to display.
Kids were very  pleased with their results.

Camille and the SUNFLOWERS

Children love books.  Children love Van Gogh (I guess mainly because of the ear dilemma).  Anyway, a great artist to study to learn a little about a very famous man that painted sunflowers.

A Vincent Van Gogh project using:

Camille and the Sunflowers

I showed the video below to my kids on the big screen.

Directions:

Draw a sunflower with pencil.
Go over with oil pastels.
Use watercolor to paint.

and
Bam!  You have a beautiful sunflower painting.

When you combine an ART lesson with Amedeo Modigliani, Kelly Rae Roberts and Elementary Self Portraits....

A few years ago when teaching Elementary School, I read Kelly Rae Roberts book. You can find our more about here on her website http://kellyraeroberts.com/. She has some pretty amazingly inspiring art! I was also researching an artist Amedeo Modigliani. You can find more about him at http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/modigliani/

Then I had an AH-HA Moment....I discussed both artist styles with my students. We drew self-portraits with really long necks. Painted them and then put a spin on our work with cutting out words that described us. I used Kelly Rae Roberts influence here. Some of the words were character traits and others were just descriptions of each person's passion and personality.

Each one of these was a huge success. Loved teaching like this because I was able to get to know my students more by what words they were choosing to put on their paper to represent them =) I think I might update this lesson and teach next year to my 6th graders at Maclay School!
