playing with picasso and sylvette's ponytail

by karen #1965 third grade teacher so u see, i teach third grade and in our third grade reading book is a story on picasso...and it just happened to be the first reading lesson on the year...i was just loving that...happy 2011 and happy pablo picasso!...so the book is based on this book by mike venezia...

so we read it...and watched some videos...Changing Faces Video...and The Animated Life of Pablo Picasso....that is about it teacher folks...the rest has stuff that kids don't really need to see....so then i read this book...

and i showed some pictures i found of what the girl with the ponytail looked like now...and i found out her name was sylvette david and she changed it to lydia corbett...and dang it if she isn't a painter...here is her website...Lydia Corbett AKA Sylvette David...look at her art...very much like picasso...check one of her paintings out...

you see what i mean?...i mean this lydia corbett even paints girls with ponytails...

anyway......my kids did have the reading comprehension going on...but...when we were done...they knew about listening and making art...cause....what is better than making art?...i had them cut out the eyes, nose, and mouth out of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper of their blown up heads...and do art...like picasso did...here is what i got from them....

now this is funny...i left the kids doing the project with a sub...i had to take a sick personal kid to doctor...and so i went back out to school over the weekend...and no on had put their names on the pictures...so...i had to put them on the wall above their name...but is was kinda like a game...i guessed who i thought was who by looking at their eyes...glasses...freckles...and get this...when the kids got back, i had done all of them right...only thing, i hung a few of the 18 upside down...oh well....

Diana Ross, 1980

I said upside down

You're turning me
You're giving love instinctively
Around and round you're turning me

Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round

Happy January 14, 2011!
